Key To A Successful PR Campaign

With so much of the national and local media focussing on the daily developments relating to Covid 19 – getting coverage for a charity tasked with supporting health workers and the fight against Covid 19 in Zambia seemed like a tall order!

 

By identifying key news angles, we were able to make the work of the Virtual Doctors interesting and relevant to a regional and national audience. 

 

Graham Precey, Chairman of the Virtual Doctors said:

 

“Beverley and Pete have certainly ignited the Virtual Doctors COVID 19 PR campaign to tell our story to a wide audience resulting in international coverage and income to deepen our mission in Africa. We appreciate their expertise and hard work”.

 

By showcasing the work of the individual NHS volunteer doctors who support the charity we generated inspirational stories that were relevant to media across the UK. 

In total we placed the charity in:

3 television features (including a BBC regional TV feature), 2 BBC local radio interviews and 10 local press and online news websites.

The publicity significantly raised the profile of the charity, improved website traffic and  contributed to £30,000 fundraising with more still coming in.

"The ongoing campaign will make a big difference to many people's lives and we are thrilled to be involved."

Putting The Media Spotlight on Charity Fundraiser

Covid 19 has wreaked havoc on charities and their fundraising efforts – so when Chailey Heritage Foundation was forced to cancel their major fundraiser the Focus 10k we needed to find a way to keep our clients in the spotlight and boost the fundraising effort.

 

Personal stories were key to the success of our campaign. By focussing on two families we were able to showcase the work of the charity, drive a powerful ask and inspire people to find a way to support them despite Covid 19! 

We generated huge media interest and helped CHF raise more than £30,000.

 

Head of fundraising at CHF – Nina Gopal said:

 

"We were delighted to achieve widespread local media coverage for the Focus 10stay across print, radio, online and even TV thanks to Ignite. There is no doubt that this not only contributed towards the success of this fundraising event during lockdown, but also helped to raise awareness of the charity to a potentially new audience.

 

 

Our media included a primetime feature on BBC regional television, three appearances on BBC local radio, and more than twenty features in print and online.

 

Bev said: "It was a real privilege speaking to, and then writing about, some amazing families.

 

"It was a great fundraising campaign and we were proud to have played our part in its success."

Ignite announces new partnership with leading Telemedicine Charity

Ignite PR and Engagement has won a major contract to promote a leading charity's Covid 19 Response Fund.

 

Virtual Doctors is based in the Sussex Innovation Centre at the University of Sussex in Falmer, Brighton.

 

Using a smartphone app, volunteer NHS doctors in this country offer advice to around 140 isolated health centres in rural Zambia.

 

Now the charity is warning urgent help is needed to tackle the coronavirus outbreak in Zambia. And it has engaged Ignite PR and Engagement to manage the media nationally, regionally and locally for its current campaign. The charity’s board has pledged an initial £10,000 to kick start the fundraising.

 

Ignite's Bev Thompson said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be working with the Virtual Doctors charity. The work it does in 140 rural health centres in Zambia, and more recently in Malawi too, is absolutely amazing.

Using smartphone technology and the expertise of our NHS doctors, volunteering in their own time, the charity is able to help diagnose conditions, treat patients and prescribe medicine. This is all the more amazing when you consider the pressures the current Covid 19 crisis is already putting on our medics”.

 

The charity's telemedicine and e-learning can support social distancing by circulating knowledge remotely. This enables virtual decisions on how to treat patients, and reduces unnecessary referrals to distant and overworked hospitals.

 

Pete Lindsey from Ignite added: "Our aim in the coming weeks is to raise brand awareness of the incredible work they do, and this hopefully will lead to a boost in their fundraising efforts”.

Cheques can also be sent, made payable to The Virtual Doctors, Sussex Innovation Centre, University of Sussex, Falmer, Brighton, BN1 9SB.

 

Suggested donations include:

 

£30 for an information pack about spreading the disease

 

£100 for equipment to help diagnose the illness

 

£110 for a water sanitation and hygiene pack for one month. This includes a foot operated wash basin, hand soap, surface disinfectant, continuous spray bottle, cleaning rags and ten reusable face masks.

The value of positive PR in a crisis

We are living in unprecedented times. There can be no dispute about that. An ongoing lockdown which could last for months and everyone told to stay at home unless you are a key worker.

 

Businesses are worried about the present never mind the unknown of what the future will hold. But, despite all of that, positive PR remains important, perhaps even more so, in a time of crisis.

 

Ignite PR and Engagement has now been working with Chailey Heritage Foundation for seven months. It's a charity based in Mid Sussex providing education, care and transition services to children and young adults with complex physical disabilities and health. They came to Ignite because they were looking for 'a freshening up'  of their PR activities.

 

So far, we've had a Royal visit, a national campaign to raise funds through The Big Give as well as some heartwarming stories about families who have been supported by CHF.

 

We are now living in different times.

 

On Monday we had a Microsoft Teams app meeting with three key people at the charity.

 

The hour long conversation was about keeping CHF in the public eye, but in a positive way. One of its biggest fundraisers is the annual Focus 10k race, due to have been held in May at Borde Hill Gardens near Haywards Heath. It's obviously been postponed so they wanted to launch Focus 10 Stay, a new online campaign. It was an invitation to the public to do TEN of anything. It may be ten press ups, ten runs around the garden... absolutely anything. This was all about keeping CHF in the public eye.

 

Bev and Pete spent two weeks working on this project and the results are high impact with a large reach.

 

Some of our successes:

 

  • Coverage on regional TV

  • Pre recorded interview on national radio

  • Live interview on BBC Radio

  • Online and print coverage in The Argus daily newspaper

  • Online coverage in the local press

  • Coverage on local hospital radio.

 

The last one may sound a bit strange but engaging with the most local media can be just as effective in reaching out to national radio. Bev and Pete are both thrilled with the results and want to say a huge thank you to the journalists who have been so receptive at a time when they are under great pressure.

 

There's still more to come because we want to gain CHF as much exposure as possible in days when reach and engagement are so important.

Ignite helps Charity hit the headlines

IGNITE PRE has continued its good work for Chailey Heritage Foundation with a powerful piece about a Dad's grateful thanks to the Sussex charity.

 

We interviewed Horsham businessman Richard Crunden, whose son Theo died aged five in October 2017.

 

Theo had been going to CHF for three years after having experienced brain damage at birth.

 

Dad Richard decided to run the Brighton Half Marathon in memory of Theo and it made for a lovely human interest story.

 

The reach was high both online and in print, with a number of articles featured in the regional media.

 

These included The Argus and the District Post in Horsham.

Peter Lindsey from Ignite said: "It was an absolute privilege to meet Richard and hear about young Theo and what he achieved in his five years of life. Richard is now determined to help other families who may find themselves in similar positions. We were thrilled with the coverage, which has sent out a very positive message about the fantastic work the Chailey Heritage Foundation does."

Ignite win major contract

Ignite PR and Engagement has won a major contract. 

We have secured a deal with the Chailey Heritage Foundation, which employs around 450 staff at its base in Mid Sussex. It provides specialist support for pupils and young people with severe disabilities. 

We are absolutely thrilled to be working with such a great institution. Ignite's Peter Lindsey said: "Chailey Heritage Foundation already has a strong brand and we will be looking to build on that." 

"Setting up a new business can be somewhat daunting but we carefully planned our launch and now we are beginning to see the success that we were confident would follow."

"I worked with Chailey Heritage when I was on the newsdesk at The Argus so I already knew quite a bit about them. They are great people doing a great job."

Rubbing shoulders with Royalty

Ignite's Bev Thompson and Peter Lindsey led on the PR campaign for the recent visit of the Duchess of Cornwall to Chailey Heritage Foundation.

Bev said: "This was our big opportunity to prove that we could deliver on a high profile visit. We came up with a seven week campaign and the outcomes were incredibly positive. The Duchess visited four projects in one day but the coverage we achieved for Chailey Heritage was far above any of the others, and that was particularly pleasing."

 

Coverage included:

A three minute feature on BBC South East Today in advance of the visit.

Live blog and video on The Argus website.

Two page feature in The Argus the following day.

Leads stories on JPI weeklies' websites across Sussex.

Features in the JPI titles the following week, including Mid Sussex Times and Sussex Express.

Wide coverage across BBC Sussex, including a live interview at 7.20am and then coverage on the teatime show.

 

Bev said: "Our focus was on TV, radio and newspapers, both online and in print. Chailey handled their own social media for the day. The purpose of the visit was for the Duchess to open the new DREAM Centre at Chailey Heritage. We were delighted with what we achieved, and so too were the bosses at Chailey Heritage."

It's amazing how powerful our branding and following are becoming online.

Yesterday, on a quiet and sunny Sunday, I posted a story about Eastbourne Foodbank on Facebook for Eastbourne Voice.

By the end of the day, it had reached more than 12,000 people with over 3,000 engagements. Now that's not bad and sends out a very positive message for the coming months. 

I'm about to refresh the post today so hopefully those figures will double. And it shows that Ignite really can reach a huge number of people with your products and messages.

Giving your community a Voice

Ignite arranges Mayoral visit to Eastbourne Pier

IT'S always nice to welcome and host VIPS, and this week the Mayor of Polegate wanted to spend some time with Eastbourne Pier owner Sheikh Abid Gulzar.

Easily arranged and Mr G, as ever, was the perfect host on a lovely sunny day. The views from the top of Eastbourne Pier are simply stunning.

Councillor David Watts, accompanied by councillor Angela Snell, spent nearly three hours on the pier and learning about the massive investment Mr G has made, as well as future plans including a jetty.

Ignite helping residents seek justice

Ignite has been working this week in the heart of London on a matter very close to everyone's hearts, and that's Grenfell.

Nobody can forget the shocking events of two years which claimed the lives of 72 people.

We were asked to look into the issue of compensation for residents affected.

This meant talking to Grenfell support groups and people right at the heart of the government.

Eastbourne finding its Voice

Ignite's Peter Lindsey is busy at work preparing the August edition of Eastbourne Voice. A bumper 8.500 copies will be printed on July 28 and distributed around town in the following five days.

The online reach is growing rapidly too with the reach now more than 20,000, and one Facebook post last Saturday attracted over 11,000 views and 1,400 engagements. So it is working. Eastbourne Voice is becoming massively popular, of that there is no doubt.

We're also now getting the paper into the right outlets, Marks and Spencer and Tesco the latest examples.

There's still time to be involved for August. We've got some great stories plus you can advertise your business as well. It's cheap, simply because it's not for profit, and I think the response is good, that's certainly what clients are telling us.

Wise event for Conservative MP

Amber Rudd MP is a woman in high demand at the moment and only on Friday she hit the national headlines, finally saying that we may now have to accept no deal Brexit.

Well, on the same day, Ignite PR organised a launch event for The Wise Group, a new creative centre in Hastings, and Amber kindly came along to lend her support.

She was joined by key members of the Hastings business community.

Ignite's Peter Lindsey said: "I worked closely with Amber for a number of years when I was Editor of the Hastings Observer so it was great to catch up with her again.

"It was so kind to give up her Friday evening to show her support for a great new business opening in Hastings.

"It's unlike me to joke but we managed to pull her leg about becoming the next Foreign Secretary now she is more favourable towards a no deal Brexit."

It's not for profit, owned by Eastbourne Volunteers, and is a CIC, community based.

It prints up to 9,000 print copies and its digital reach monthly is more than 20,000.

 

Peter has big plans for Eastbourne Voice in the coming months.

 

Ignite may also be looking to produce newspapers or newsletters in other areas. Let us know if you're interested.

 

Helen Burton, managing director of Eastbourne Voice, said: "Peter has brought his many years of expertise to the newspaper.

Kellie Barker's clothing firm Born Anxious is leading the way in comfortable, smart clothing for children and young adults with autism and other challenges. Her unique company and  personal story have attracted attention from across the media spectrum.

Ignite's Beverley Thompson used her experience as a former BBC news anchor and journalist to guide Kellie through what can be a daunting experience for people getting used to life in the media spotlight. A bespoke training session included preparation for interviews, techniques for dealing with every media situation and helpful scenarios.

Launch Partnerships

IGNITE organised a successful launch Open Morning for a company specialising in hot desks, meeting rooms and conference facilities.

The Wise Group, based on the Castleham Industrial Estate in Hastings, asked Ignite's Peter Lindsey to invite 40 guests.

These included VIPs such as the Mayor of Hastings and chairman of Rother District Council.

But the list also included local companies likely to book business, and that is exactly what happened on the day as numerous leads were generated.

Robert Beevis from The Wise Group said: "We were thrilled with how the event went, it was so beneficial to us.

"Peter was very proactive from the very start, he has great contacts and he made everything happen, which was great."

Peter, pictured, also represented The Wise Group at a breakfast organised by the Federation of Small Businesses.

Peter's talk to the gathering at the Powdermills Hotel in Battle brought one firm booking within two hours!

Ignite supporting National Volunteers Week

IT was National Volunteers Week at the start of June, and what better publicity for a hotel than to welcome 100 volunteers to an Afternoon Tea free of charge to say a big thank you.

Well, that's what Ignite's Peter Lindsey organised for Lions Hotels in East Sussex on Friday June 7. Peter generated all the publicity, both online and in print, and the result was 100 fantastic people, all with great stories to tell.

The event was held at the Lions Boship Farm Hotel in Hailsham. Owner Sheikh Abid Gulzar said: "It's a great reputational boost to host an event during National Volunteers Week. It was very humbling to welcome into my hotel some superb carers, volunteers, fundraisers and many others. They all had great stories to tell and I respect each and every one of them. Peter, as ever, did an amazing job. It made me very proud."
